This is a live album by Frisian rock band Pughs Place. Surprisingly it contains solely tracks that werent released as a studio recording, that is on their one and only studio "West One" from 1969. The music on this album is rather heavy, with plenty guitar and flute solos. Also the vibes, played by Kalma give this release a very distinct sound. As said, the music is heavy rock. The progressive parts come from the instrumental breaks. This can typically be said from the first song on the album, the second has a Jethro Tull falvor over it, mainly of course due to the flute solo. The third track starts rather lovely, but then evolves into a driving rhythm with extensive solos for guitar and flute. Great track. "Flying so high" is a beautiful melodic track and another highlight of the album. The closer, "After death" is the longest track on the album, and that usually means the highlight of the album. That principle goes here too. It is a dynamic track with lots of room for improvisations. All in all a good album. Musically it doesnt differ much from the studio album, albeit a bit more heavy and aggressive. (Dutch progressive rock of the nineteen seventies)

Ramayana Soul Sabdatanmantra 地獄 Scattered Purgatory God of Silver Grass

Ramayana Soul Sabdatanmantra 地獄 Scattered Purgatory God of Silver Grass Reviewed by Nathan Ford There are few who read this rag who would doubt that we place Kikagaku Moyo at the very pinnacle of the current Japanese psychedelic scene. That being the case, its not unusual at all to discover that Guruguru Brain, the label run by Kikagaku Moyos Tomoyuki Katsurada is a veritable treasure trove of adventurous psychedelia, inhabited by names known to few in the Western world. Their first release was a wonderful and essential sampler of modern Japanese psychedelia which can still be downloaded for free here, but its two more recent releases that we concern ourselves with today. Ramayana Soul is first on the turntable, and while the band are actually Indonesian, its obvious why Katsuradas interest was peaked. "Sabdatanmantra" is a joyous wonder that perfectly illustrates the singular way in which Eastern psychedelia embraces free form spontaneity without sacrificing a tune, or in...
