Karel Appel supplies us with a spooky intro, he was a Dutch abstract-expressionist painter who used a battery of percussion instruments, piano and electric organ for a soundtrack to a 1963 documentary about himself, by cinematographer Jan Vrijman. De Maskers are up next, they released a few albums and singles in the late 60s, guitarist/vocalist Jan de Hont was in Cargo, also appearing here. They play a brilliant slice of ominous psych. It differs from Volume 19: "Kraut Rockin" in that its not specifically intended to include bands that are linked with the Krautrock movement, just great bands! After recording Amon Duul II�s �Yeti�, Dieter Serfas and Christian Shart split to form their own project called Sameti in Munich in 1971, we start with their catchy Get Up. Second track Hypodermic Needle / Smile Please is the AB sides of a great single from a band that had no albums until much later in their career, which is a shame as Novaks Kapelle showed talent with their super-heavy psych. Languages, literature, and music were burned and berated. Musicians before 1975 suffered many difficulties as a result. The kind of material I generally look for was especially rare in the early 70s, just at the time when most of the world was enjoying its peaks. [Editors note: there have now been five Latin rock volumes: 118 (Chicano Rock) 84 (Brazil), 89 (Mexico), 104 (Peru) and 43 (general South America)] One name stands out here, with contributions to the three tracks from Aeroblus, Pappo and Miguel Abuelo. Norberto Napolitano, nick-named Pappo, started playing guitar at the age of ten, and developed a distinctively heavy, aggressive and fuzz-laden style. He became very active in Argentine rock from its beginning and made his name as guitarist of Los Gatos, the first rock band to enter the mainstream charts in Argentina. The last time I did this was in vol 17 last year and as you can see its taken me a while to find a decent amount for another, the task has been rewarding as Ive had to took far afield from the usual suspects that I used in that one. J.C. Heavy were a short-lived act from Manchester UK and have one of the most immediate, hard-hitting tracks here. The concept of an Argentine psych-fuzz band covering Mountains Mississippi Queen is like a match made in heaven and Alta Tensions short but sweet track nails it! The Rattles started life as a Hamburg beat group and played with The Beatles, later they made some hard rock/pop crossover and this track is wonderful. Expecting this to be hard, I was prepared for it take a long time to finish, like the Greek comp did for example. To my surprise it was not a hard task and I was able to wrap up the whole thing in a couple of days, I am very happy with the results! What I have found is that, although the relative number of old Welsh rock bands is low, the quality of them all is consistently great and I did not have the usual arduous task of running through & rejecting tens or hundreds of albums, as each one I discovered had at least one excellent track, in this respect I think it was the easiest regional comp to make so far...
