The British Space Group The Phantasmagoria The Collected Phantasm EPs Reviewed by Grey Malkin (The Hare & The Moon) Previously reviewed here at The Active Listener, The British Space Groups d�but album Eyes Turned Skyward remains a particular favourite of this writer, its evocative and descriptive vintage electronica evoking a very human sense of melancholy, icy beauty and dystopian unease. Essentially the work of one man, musician and writer Ian Holloway (whose solo releases encompassing post-industrial found sounds, field recordings, drone work are equally as essential and recommended), here The British Space Group make a welcome return with The Phantasmagoria, a collected set of the Groups Phantasm EPs. A comprehensive combination of those releases 42 electronic radiophonic miniatures, each individual segment lasts around one to two minutes thus creating a veritable and pleasing labyrinth of moods and soundscapes, each piece taking the listener on another deliciously disorientat...

Well, for a start its a ubiquitous and incautiously-used genre tag. Some people say its a meaningless term and I can see their point. Its been said that some of Pink Floyds earliest explorations were space rock, though Floyd themselves dont agree, but there�s been experimentalists making eerie electronic outer space and science-influenced music since the 50s and even earlier. Is �space rock� music with lyrics about space travel? Is it music with cheesy sci-fi outer-space sound effects? (�Outer-space sound effects� being something of an oxymoron considering there is no sound in space).
