Quintessence Spirits From Another Time 1969 71 uk based international multicultural trippy psych prog rock 2016 double disc set

Quintessence Spirits From Another Time 1969 71 uk based international multicultural trippy psych prog rock 2016 double disc set Formed in fashionable Ladbroke Grove in 1969, this international six-piece played extended, improvisatory compositions highlighted by lengthy guitar solos, flute, sitar and communal, Indian-inspired chanting. They took on Eastern names to match their philosophies, with Australian flautist and founder Ronald Rothfield becoming Raja Ram, for example, and American bassist Richard Vaughan known as Shambhu Babaji. Far from a niche, underground concern, however, Quintessence quickly signed to Island after a major-label bidding war, and soon appeared frequently in the music weeklies, and even live on BBC2 and in Nicolas Roegs Glastonbury Fayre. Across five studio albums, ranging from 1969s In Blissful Company to 1972s Indweller, they journeyed into their own groovy mysticism, lyrically paying as much heed to St Pancras and Ladbroke Grove as to Mount Kailash and va...

Rainbow Ffolly Sallies Fforth 1968 uk beautiful orchestrated swinging psychedelia 2005 remaster

Rainbow Ffolly Sallies Fforth 1968 uk beautiful orchestrated swinging psychedelia 2005 remaster Spectromorphic Iridescence from a Tube of Smarties For years, Rainbow Ffolly Sallies Fforth, PMC 7050 (stereo PCS 7050), has been the ultimate mystery album for collectors. Mint copies change hands at upwards of 120, an Italian bootleg has been issued, and yet the group members have remained anonymous. Time to unffold the tale of the Rainbow Ffolly, a band influential on the careers of the Moody Blues, possibly the Who and even the Beatles. The Ffollys story, with its incredible string of ffirsts, is unique amongst groups of the time. Only when it reaches the part where the band is forced to split through lack of income does the tale become the sadly-familiar Sixties shot-at-stardom that failed. Rainbow Ffolly, an art college band, evolved in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, from a group called Force Four. Jonathan Dunsterville picked the new name to conjure up the eye-searing colours associa...

The Day After The Sabbath 40 King Richard the Second UK pt 1

The Day After The Sabbath 40 King Richard the Second UK pt 1 Download here: [mf] or [mg] password:  tdats TDATS 40 is a collection of music from ye olde England. It begins with a track from The Way We Live . This duo recorded one LP under this name before changing to Tractor, who some of you may know from the excellent track All Ends Up on TTTDF vol 5. There is an interview with Tractor/TWWL members guitarist/vocalist Jim Milne, percussionist Steve Clayton, bassist Dave Addison and band manager Chris Hewitt here at Psychedelic Baby webzine. Ugly Custard appear to be one of those rock exploitation bands that were brought together to record a bunch of covers and standards in the popular sound of the time, their version of traditional folk song Scarboro Fair offers a great variety of sounds and really is a little epic in itself. Slowbone were a band doing the rounds in the east end of London around the early seventies. It is alleged that young soon-to-be members of NWOBHM ...

Pugma Ho! Pugma Ho! 1969 2004 uk rough downer rock with experimental mood 2004 release

Pugma Ho! Pugma Ho! 1969 2004 uk rough downer rock with experimental mood 2004 release It started in 1968 as a Jo Wright Art School band the Incas with Chris Camm guitar and Dave Coxon bass joined eventually by Keith Gotheridge on drums and Cliffe Simms on keyboards playing pop around the local pubs and clubs.  As the band moved towards the rock influences we decided to recruit vocalist Bev Staley who promised to be a good front man.  Bevs arrival was soon followed by Cliffs departure as the bands influences started to change.  With original material and a heavier rock sound it was decided a name change was called for, Pugma-Ho (kiss my arse, in Gaelic)  was born.   We started to establish ourselves on the rock circuit, playing the top London gigs like The Marquee Club, The Temple, The Roundhouse and The Greyhound.  We also played several gigs at the Liverpool Cavern rock nights, usually followed by gigs at Liverpools Mardi Gras.  In 1972  we were...

The Climax Blues Band Plays On 1969 uk outstanding blues rock with experimental mood 2013 remaster and expanded

The Climax Blues Band Plays On 1969 uk outstanding blues rock with experimental mood 2013 remaster and expanded Britains Climax Blues Band didnt waste any time following up their self-titled debut in 1969 (dropping the moniker The Climax Chicago Blues Band), as they once again entered EMIs Abbey Road studios and put together Plays On, a highly adventurous and varied affair that saw plenty of new elements starting to creep into their once straight Chicago styled blues sound. The band had then slimmed down to a five-piece, consisting of Colin Cooper (vocals, sax, harmonica, bamboo whistle), Peter Haycock (guitars, vocals), Arthur Wood (keyboards), Derek Holt (bass, Mellotron), and George Newsome (drums). It was at this juncture that the band started to experiment with rock and jazz, and mixed with their already formidable blues chops the results on Plays On are quite spectacular. Esoteric Recordings continues on with the CBB reissues, giving this one stellar, crystal clear sound and anot...

The Pandamonium The Unreleased Album 1969 uk outstanding psych folk rock 2004 release

The Pandamonium The Unreleased Album 1969 uk outstanding psych folk rock 2004 release Singers/guitarists Martin Curtis and Bob Poton started their professional musical careers in 1963 as members of the beat band The Pandas.  By 1966 theyd expanded their line up to include Kent Mick Glass and drummer Steve Chapman.  Theyd also opted for a name change, dropping The Pandas for the hipper Pandamonium. Produced by Shel Talmy and Hugh Murphy, the collection found the duo supported by members of Fairport Convention/Fotheringay (Jerry Donahue, Gerry Conway and Tim Donaldson) and Heads, Hands and Feet (Albert Lee and Chas Hodges).  Musically the album was quite different from the earlier "Thoughts & Words" release.  Whereas the former sported a distinctive reflective folk feel, material like I Know You, the Badfinger-ish Sunrise and Sit and Watch the Sunshine showcased a far more commercial and up-tempo pop feel.   Showcasing all original material, the pair had a cle...

The Magic Mixture This The Magic Mixture 1967 69 uk brilliand psychedelic rock 2008 extra tracks issue The Magic Mixture were a British psychedelic band comprised Terry Thomas (guitar/vocals), Melvyn Hacker (bass), Jack Collins (drums) and Stan Curtis (organ) . Mel and Terry were  both students at the Central Foundation Boys School in London in the early of 60s. After some line up changes they released their sole album in 1968. It is regarded as one of the better examples of the psych genre, featuring engaging instrumental work on tracks such as (Im So) Sad, Urge To Leave and Slowly The Day. Originally released on Saga, this superb piece of psychedelic freakbeat should be in every record collection sharing section with UK psych gods like July, Skip Bifferty, Forever Amber, Five Day Week Straw People, The Open Mind and the likes Even though according to The Tapestry Of Delights book the Saga LPs are supposed to have been recorded at a school premises rather than in a proper s...

The British North American Act In The Beginning 1969 canada uk eminent garage acid psych

The British North American Act In The Beginning 1969 canada uk eminent garage acid psych Named for an act of British Parliament that helped establish the Canadian constitution, the British North-American Act were, fittingly enough, comprised of musicians from both Canada and the U.K. (though in the true spirit of internationalism, keyboard man Andy Bator was born in Hungary), and their sole album, originally released in 1969, is a gentle and likable fusion of folk-rock and psychedelia, with a bit of garage rock creeping in around the edges. "Joe Cool" is a swaggering tale of a self-styled ladies man that wouldnt seem at all out of place on a vintage garage rock playlist (especially with Bob Allens primal guitar work), and "If Youre Looking for Honey" covers similar musical ground, but most of the album follows a gentler and trippier path, especially the sunny "Corduroy Coat," the languid and low-key "The World Would Understand," the baroque pop e...

The Stormsville Shakers One And One Is The Complete Recordings 1965 67 uk wonderful mod beat with psych flashes 2015 issue Phillip Goodhand-Tait has had his songs recorded by artists ranging from Gene Pitney to Roger Daltrey and has also fronted a number of bands in his many decades in the music industry.  Cherry Red Group imprint RPM has collected 27 tracks by singer-musician-songwriter Goodhand-Tait, solo and with his bands The Stormsville Shakers and Circus as One and One is Two: Complete Recordings 1965-1967. Born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, Goodhand-Tait began his music career while still in his teenage years.  In his new liner notes penned especially for this release, he recalls receiving the sum of five pounds for assembling a five-piece band to play a dance at the local drill hall in 1960.  After flirting with names The Royphillians, Phil Tone and the Midnighters, and The Vibrants, the group settled on The Stormsville Shakers in 1961. Raw Material Time is 1971 uk great heavy prog rock

Raw Material Time is 1971 uk great heavy prog rock A progressive rock band whose original albums are now very rare and sought-after. Mike Fletcher had earlier been in Steam and Cliff Harewood later came on board from Welcome, but neither of these bands had made it onto vinyl. Some members were later in Shoot; Dave Green had been a member of Deep Feeling. "Time Is" with good progressive pieces based on heavy guitar and sax as well as the latter accompanied by keyboard chords. "Ice Queen" includes frozen wind sounds and a slightly discordant flute solo. The most sophisticated composition is "Empty Houses", which has some inspired melodies and strong vocals. "Insolent Lady" has a slow, mellow beginning with acoustic guitar and flute.  This gives way to a piano break which, in turn, evolves into progressive rock with guitar and sax, although this becomes a bit repetitious near the end. "Miracle Worker" is mainly based on Dave Brubecks ...

The Gods Genesis 1968 uk splendid psych rock 2009 japan extra tracks remaster

The Gods Genesis 1968 uk splendid psych rock 2009 japan extra tracks remaster After leaving Stevenage based RnB outfit The Jimmy Brown Sound in early 1965 keyboardist / guitarist / vocalist Ken Hensley formed The Gods with Mick Taylor (guitar), John Glasscock (bass / vocals) and Brian Glasscock (drums). However this line up only lasted until June 1967 when Taylor quit to join John Mayalls Bluesbreakers and then The Rolling Stones. Hensley then moved to Hampshire where, whilst living in a van(!), he met up with bassist Paul Newton and put together a new version of The Gods which featured Hensley, Newton, drummer Lee Kerslake and guitarist John Konas. However despite building up a good following on the South Coast collage circuit Newton left (he later became a founding member of Uriah Heep) and was replaced by Greg Lake. With a residency at Londons Marquee and a contract with EMIs Columbia label it looked like The Gods would at last release something but, as Hensley recalls, "Just a...

Riff Raff Original Man 1974 uk remarkable jazz prog rock 2017 korean remaster

Riff Raff Original Man 1974 uk remarkable jazz prog rock 2017 korean remaster Tommy Eyre and Roger Sutton were neighbours in 1969. Eyre was the organ player with Joe Cockers Grease Band, and when the band broke up after their No.1 hit () - "With a Little Help From My Friends") he chose to stay in London and try his luck rather than go back home to Sheffield. Tommy got the gig with Aynsley Dunbars Retaliation and brought Roger in for the Blue Whale project. When Aynsley left to join Frank Zappa, Roger, in turn, introduced Tommy to John Mark and Johnny Almond who had just left John Mayalls Turning Point band. The four of them became the Mark-Almond Band which was very succesful in the USA for about three years. Roger Sutton left the Mark-Almond Band shortly before their third album, when he and Jon Mark couldnt get along, () - check Rogers lyric, "God damn the man who ever tried to put his mark on you"). It was recorded in a place that Richard Branson had recently ope...

Riff Raff Riff Raff 1973 uk fantastic prog rock 2016 korean remaster

Riff Raff Riff Raff 1973 uk fantastic prog rock 2016 korean remaster Riff Raffs self-titled effort from 1973 was the bands first album proper. Alan Marshall was not replaced when he left, with Tommy Eyre, Roger Sutton, and Pete Kirtley all taking turns on the vocal chores. The jazz -rock sound that Eyre and Sutton had explored with Mark-Almond was the springboard for the exploratory rock music made by Riff Raff. Here deep groove -- la Brian Augers Oblivion Express -- and tough rock choruses and dynamics were married to the jazz sense of structure and composition. Far more "progressive" sounding than their early demos, this music nonetheless has little to do with the excesses of the Canterbury Scene. From the opener, with the glorious Fender Rhodes and electric guitar interplay in which the blues and jazz commingle in a rock picture frame, through the improvisational melodic and modal work on "Dreaming" to the glorious theatricality and drama of "La Mme Chose...

Renaissance Renaissance 1969 uk great prog jazz rock with classical influence 2008 remaster

Renaissance Renaissance 1969 uk great prog jazz rock with classical influence 2008 remaster The history of Renaissance is essentially the history of two separate groups, rather similar to the two phases of the Moody Blues or the Drifters. The original group was founded in 1969 by ex-Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty as a sort of progressive folk-rock band, who recorded two albums (of which only the first, self-titled LP came out in America, on Elektra Records) but never quite made it, despite some success on Englands campus circuit.  The band went through several membership changes, with Relf and his sister Jane (who later fronted the very Renaissance-like Illusion) exiting and McCarty all but gone after 1971. The new lineup formed around the core of bassist Jon Camp, keyboard player John Tout, and Terry Sullivan on drums, with Annie Haslam, an aspiring singer with operatic training and a three-octave range.  The original groups debut album was a then-groundbreaking...
