Terje Rypdal nasceu no dia 23 de agosto de 1947 em Oslo, Noruega. Rypdal forjou ao longo do tempo um estilo incomum, misturando elementos encontrados na m�sica new age, rock e jazz. Ligado ao selo ECM desde o come�o dos anos 70, a t�cnica de Rypdal foi aprimorando seus sons densos e espaciais de uma maneira pouco comum. 

Apesar de ter sido treinado como um pianista, Rypdal era autodidata em guitarra e no in�cio foi muito influenciado por Jimi Hendrix. Ele frequentou Universidade de Oslo onde aprendeu o conceito crom�tico lidiano de organiza��o tonal atrav�s de seu criador, George Russell. 

Rypdal tocou com Russell durante um tempo e depois come�ou uma associa��o com Jan Garbarek no final dos anos 60. Ele formou o grupo Odissey em 1972 e conduziu v�rios grupos pequenos desde metade dos anos setenta. Importante guitarrista e compositor noruegu�s, Terje Rypdal recebeu admira��o dos cr�ticos americanos de jazz. 

Ele gravou continuamente para a ECM a partir de 1972, utilizando como sidemen o saxofonista Garbarek, o pianista Bobo Stenson, o trompetista Palle Mikkelborg, o baixista Miroslav Vitous, o baterista Jack DeJohnette e o violoncelista David Darling. Fonte: Clube do Jazz.
