Television Spotlight Eyewitness Starring Tyler Young and James Paxton

Eyewitness is a ten episode television series that aired on the USA Network last fall and is based on the Norwegian series yevitne. There are multiple storylines featured in the series, but they are all related to a murder that is witnessed by two teenage boys, Philip (Tyler Young) and Lukas (James Paxton), that involves a drug operation and the FBI. Philip and Lukas decide to not come forward with what they know about the murders, which makes both of their lives more difficult over time. Making matters even more difficult for the teens is their mutual attraction. Philip is gay and comfortable with himself, while the more popular and athletic Lukas is not yet ready to accept and flaunt that he has fallen for Philip.
As the teens become closer, Lukas tries to hide what is happening from his friends who believe Philip is an outcast and he spends more time with his girlfriend in order to fight his feelings for Philip. The coming out process for Lukas is not easy and threatens his friendship and future with Philip. Meanwhile, the other more mature characters juggle storylines of their own relating to the murder and the drug angle, but none are particularly interesting. Besides the performances from the aforementioned actors and their chemistry, which feels real, the only other aspect of Eyewitness that I can recommend is the cinematography (the series is set in rural New York) which perfectly captures the mood of the series in any given episode. Eyewitness is worth watching, but I cannot help but wonder how much better it could have been had it consisted of maybe five episodes instead of ten and focused primarily on Lukas and Philip.
